The research aims at adapting to the sicilian mediterranean context the protocol implemented on a national scale by ispra (institute for environmental protection and research), which is rather calibrated with respect to the large fluvial basins of the central and northern italy. thus, a need arises to face and solve some methodological limits that are posed to the national protocol by the specific hydro-morphological and climatic context of the mediterranean area exploiting the whole sicilian territory as experimental site. in particular, new functionality indexes are to be found and optimized with respect to the strong seasonal variability of the water flows as well as to the intense morphodynamic activity on the river bed and slopes. at the same time, approaches and methods will be optimized for the of sediment source areas and connectivity along slopes, as well as along the river bed.
